When his nephew played football he contacted Bart Starr who wrote the team a special letter when they went undefeated. He played softball (on the Pinkys team when they won the city Championship and bowled in younger years. Sue was a faithful bleacher-sitter and couples league partner. He retired in 2003 with 32 years of service at UW Oshkosh. The majority of those years were spent as Equipment Manager with the Athletic Department where he and Sue made life-long friends with Staff and students, who called him a mentor and favorite uncle. He travelled with the Titan baseball team to two National Championships and also received two championship rings a real hi-light in his career. After retirement he worked and volunteered with the Titan football team, who appreciated his advice , friendship and expertise. He was honorary captain of the team on October 23, 2010.He and Sue enjoyed camping with his cousins and friends and travelling throughout the US especially New Mexico/Southwest with neighbors and several times to Hawaii-their favorite destination. The most memorable trip was Hawaii with his nephew and family in 2007.Mike spent nearly 30 years on the Committee of the Oshkosh Chapter of Whitetails Unlimited with 20 years as Chapter President. During Mikes time they grew to consistently win the largest Chapter in the Nation award. Time spent deer hunting with his nephews and cousins were special times for him as was pheasant hunting with our neighbor and the dogs in fall. He bagged his biggest buck hunting with his nephew. Tournament Walleye fishing was his passion. In 2005 Mike and his partner were qualifiers in the Cabelas National Team Championship in Dubuque. The cameraman spent a few hours in their boat, so they were on a Sunday morning fishing show. So many thanks to his walleye fishing partners, pre-fishing buddies and fishing advisors for helping him compete in 2014.In the end, Mike won his final competition with cancer, as he suffers no longer. He was a courageous fighter throughout. He will be sadly missed by many especially by his loving wife, Sue, and faithful chocolate lab, Cocoa. Remember the fun times with Mike. There were many! And, celebrate his life, because he wants you to do that.Thank you to friends and neighbors for the continuous supply of comfort food, conversations and support, and of course, Vickys peanut butter cookies.
