Michael Makus

Michael Louis Makus, 62, of Oshkosh, passed away Tuesday, February 4th, 2014 at St. Luke's Hospital in Milwaukee, with his family at his side. Mike was born in Oshkosh on July 16th, 1951, the son of Orville and Dorothy Makus.He recently completed a career with Mercury Marine. He was an accomplished racer, setting a world record as a driver in tunnel hull boat racing, and actively participating in RC car racing circuits with his son Michael. In recent years, he led numerous fundraising and adoption efforts for Heartbound Greyhound Rescue, and fostered several of the dogs as well. Mike was known for his dry wit, his calm demeanor, and most of all, his love for his family. He was actively involved in all aspects of his children's lives, and loved providing daily care for his grandson. He had celebrated the weddings of all three of his children, and he was deeply proud of them all.Mike is survived by his wife, Stephanie, of Oshkosh; daughter Michelle Shory, son-in-law Bill Shory and granddaughter Isabella Shory of Louisville, KY; daughter Amanda Hoff, son-in-law Daniel Hoff and grandson Graham Hoff of Menasha; son Michael Makus and daughter-in-law Chelsie Makus of Oshkosh; sister Cheryl Atkinson and brother-in-law Dr. David Atkinson of Norway, MI.; and numerous nephews and nieces.He was preceded in death by his parents, Orville and Dorothy Makus.A memorial service for Mike will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 8, 2014 at First United Methodist Church with Rev. John Hobbins officiating. Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service. He'll be remembered at the BRL Tour race on February 15th and 16th at Hobby Town USA in Oshkosh.Memorials can be made to Heartbound Greyhound Rescue or First United Methodist Church of Oshkosh.
