Norma Karel Moore (nee Hinton), age 74, passed away Sunday, August 11, 2024, at Evergreen Sharehaven Home of Oshkosh, WI with her beloved daughters at her side. She was born to the late Vernon and Harryette (Hodgson) Hinton in Sebastopol, CA on December 23, 1949.
At a young age, Karel developed a deep love for the arts, and was a lifelong lover of books, old movies, music, and more than anything else, dancing. She found her dance partner for life when she met Jerry Moore; they were united in marriage on February 16, 1985, in Antioch, CA. The couple spent countless nights ballroom dancing and swinging to big band music on the floors of their own home (most often in the kitchen!). Their love was evident in every step they took.
Karel proudly earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Oklahoma, juggling her studies while raising her family. She would remain an enthusiastic OU Sooners fan for decades. Truly, Karel was a woman of many passions. She owned a flower shop in CA and would continue to create stunning floral arrangements for holidays and family weddings. Karel later worked in several community libraries sharing her love of reading and found great satisfaction in helping others find books that fueled their love for literature as well.
For years, Karel attended Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church of Cottage Grove, WI and served for a time as an elder. She even coined the church’s motto, “A Small Church with a Big Heart.”
Karel is lovingly survived by her five daughters, Juliet (Paul) Lockwood, Andrea Geurin, Merry Geurin, Katherine (Jeff) Kivett, Kareline (Michael) Castor, and three stepchildren, Jerry D. Moore, Tami Donald, and Lori Stacy. "Mimi" cherished her grandchildren, Peyton Soler, Alec Durdin, Sydney Kivett, Penelope Kivett, Michael Castor, III and Elliot Castor. Karel is also survived by her dear cousins Paula Nikolai and Sherry Carli.
In addition to her parents and husband, Karel was preceded in death by her aunt and uncle who held a special place in her heart, Irma and Art Buffo.
Per Karel’s wishes, private graveside services will take place as she is laid to rest with her husband, Jerry Moore, at the Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in San Diego, CA.
Karel’s family would like to extend their deep appreciation to the wonderful staff and caregivers at Evergreen Sharehaven of Oshkosh, WI and AseraCare Hospice - Green Bay. Your kindness and compassion brought a great deal of comfort to Karel and her daughters at such a difficult time. Also, a heartfelt thank you to Karel's team at Froedtert and Medical College of Wisconsin Transplant Center, Karel’s last six years had been a true gift and would not have been possible without the selfless gift of her heart donor.
In lieu of gifts, please register as an organ donor and consider a donation to a hospice organization of your choice.
