Rachel Ann Solverud passed away at the age of 91 on June 27, 2014 at Evergreen Retirement Community. She was born on March 10, 1923, in Amherst, Wisconsin. Her parents were Robert (Bert) and Olga (Doxrude) Solverud. She attended elementary school and high school in the Amherst and Nelsonville public schools.Upon completion of Amherst High School, she attended Central State Teachers College in Stevens Point, earning a two-year diploma. Her first teaching position was in Nelsonville, where she spent two years before joining the WAVES (Women Accepted for Voluntary Emergency Service), a branch of the U.S. Navy. Rachel served her country during World War II in the Hospital Corps. She had her boot camp training at Hunter College in the Bronx and attended Hospital Corps School at Great Lakes, Illinois. She then was stationed there caring for wounded servicemen.Upon discharge from the Navy, she continued her education earning Bachelors and Masters degrees in teaching. She taught elementary school in Nelsonville, Mendota, Cottage Grove and Beloit before settling in Oshkosh where she completed the last 33 years of her teaching career, which spanned 39 years as a classroom teacher.Rachel was a member of the Oshkosh Winnebago County and National Education Associations. As a member of Christ Lutheran Church, she was involved in volunteer work there as well as Mercy Hospital, Father Carr and Bethel home. Most of her volunteer work consisted of sewing and craft projects. Rachel and her sister, Louise, traveled extensively both for pleasure and on study tours relating to their areas of teaching.Survivors include a niece and three nephews, Lori (Kevin) Butch of Green Bay, Lane (Carol) Solverud of Pittsville, Mark (Lois) Solverud of Madison and Ross (Vicki) Solverud of Stevens Point. Rachel is also survived by a sister-in-law, Delores Solverud of Scandinavia, WI, four great nieces, three great nephews, and one great-great nephew. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Lynn R. Solverud and Robert E. Solverud, who died in infancy, and a sister, Louise M. Solverud.Funeral services will take place on Saturday, July 5, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Christ Lutheran Church with Rev. Karen Jewell officiating. Friends and relatives may call from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Rachel will be buried in the Nelsonville Cemetery in Portage County. Memorials will be donated to Rachels favorite charities.
