Richard J. (Dick) Spanbauer, age 87, of Oshkosh, WI, passed away peacefully at home with family at his side on Friday, October 21st, 2011. Richard was born in Oshkosh, WI on October 25th, 1923, the son of John & Margaret (Adams) Spanbauer. He attended St. Vincent Grade School, Oshkosh High School, and Oshkosh State Teachers College. Richard married Dolores (Seidl) Spanbauer on March 14th, 1953. Richard is survived by children: Thomas Spanbauer (Lonni), Patricia Wesner (Terry), Susan Spanbauer, Steven Spanbauer (Kay Beulen), Brian Spanbauer, all of Oshkosh, WI; grandchildren: Lisa Spanbauer (Rick Nemecek), Oshkosh, WI; Maggie Fenn, San Diego, CA; Jared (JT) Spanbauer, Madison, WI. Rachel Spanbauer, Payton Spanbauer, Reid Spanbauer, all of Oshkosh, WI; great grandchild: Joshua Nemecek, Oshkosh, WI; brother: John G. Spanbauer; sister-in-law: Barbara Spanbauer. He is further survived by extended family members, Laura Tod (Bill Kienast) of Oshkosh, WI. Richard was preceeded in death by his parents, son Gerald, brother James, and former spouse Dolores Spanbauer.Richard was ranked a Chief Petty Officer and served as a Chief Dental Technician in the United States Navy while serving during World War II and on the USS St. Paul during the Korean War. Richard was a recruiter for the Oshkosh Naval Reserve Unit and was a member of the Fleet Reserve Association. He further retired from the United States Navy after 39 years of service, which was proudly displayed on his personalized license plates (39YRS). Richard was employed for 29 years as an Oshkosh Fire Fighter and active with the Firefighter Union; holding various officer positions. He was also a member of the Retired Professional Firefighters of Wisconsin. Richard was a member of the Oshkosh Elks Lodge No. 292 and enjoyed many activites throughout his life. He enjoyed playing hockey, bowling, golf (most proud of his hole-in-one), softball (served on Oshkosh Baseball Commission), cribbage (was dealt a 29 hand on January 10th, 1989). Richard also enjoyed going to the dog track and attending sporting events of his children & grandchildren. He especially enjoyed his frequent visits to the fire station and Friar Tucks. Visitation for family and friends will be at the Konrad-Behlman Funeral Home-Westside(corner of Witzel & Lake Pointe Dr.) on Tuesday October 25, 2011 from 4-7 p.m. Visitation will also be held on Wednesday at the funeral home from 10 a.m until 10:50 followed by burial at Calvary Catholic Cemetery where military honors will be performed.A memorial in Richards name will be established.
