Robert A. Messner, age 86, of Oshkosh, WI passed away at his home Sunday November 23, 2014 with his family by his side.Robert was born in Milwaukee, WI in 1928 and spent his boyhood in Beaver Dam and Cudahy, WI.He married Betty Ann Cherti in 1950.He earned his teaching degree from Milwaukee State Teachers College. After completing his degree, he enlisted in the 5th Army Band. During Roberts tenure as a soldier musician he was able to study flute with Emil Eck at Northwestern University. Upon leaving the service, Robert continued his education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he earned a Masters Degree with emphasis in music and education. Roberts 34 year teaching career was spent with the Oshkosh Public School System. During that time he taught orchestra and band and ended his education career as a high school guidance counselor.Robert was Associate Director of the Oshkosh Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Harold Arentsen; he served as choir director for St. Peters Parish and was a longtime member of the Oshkosh Community Band. In 2010 Robert was inducted into the Oshkosh West High School Music Wall of Fame. Robert was also presented with an Award of Appreciation from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point for his contribution of traditional Native American flute music to the Menominee Clans Story website. After his retirement, Robert and Betty traveled widely in their RV, spending their winters in Arizona. There, Robert formed a trio called The Almost Baroque Trio consisting of flute, cello and piano. The trio performed around the East Valley of Phoenix AZ.Robert is survived his loving wife of 64 years, Betty Ann, his four children, Cynthia (Michael) Fenrich, Gail Richardson, Karen Ann (Michael) Hoffman, and Leann (William) Miller. He is further survived by 7 grandchildren: Sean, Robert, Christopher, Benjamin and Betty Grace Richardson; and Stephanie Miller and Renee (Vance) Coker and four great grandchildren. He will missed by his brother William Messner of Cudahy, WI as well as many nieces and nephews.Visitation will be Friday November 28, 2014 from 10:00 am until 11:00 am at St. Raphaels Catholic Church, 830 S Westhaven, Dr., Oshkosh, WI. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00am. Roberts family would like to thank the Visiting Nurses Association-Hospice, especially Amanda and Tammy. In lieu of flowers please a memorial is being established to benefit the Hospice of Aroura Visiting Nurse Association, 931 Discovery Road, Green Bay, WI 54311, Attention: Oshkosh Hospice.
