Robert Charles Ginke, age 89 of Oshkosh, died Friday June 13, 2008 at King Veterans Home. He was born October 19, 1918, son of the late Herbert W. and Orphia A. Koehn Ginke.Robert began his career building boats for Dunphy in 1935 until the onset of WWII. He worked for Burger Boat in Manitowoc constructing minesweepers under a Naval Contract. He joined the United States Navy in 1944 and was selected for a special shipbuilding project for the Office of Strategic Services (OSS). While in OSS in Cuba, he contracted tuberculosis, and was treated at Bethesda Naval Hospital. He was transferred to Sunnyview TB Sanitorium and was later discharged in 1946. He returned to Dunphy following his discharge, where he became plant manager/superintendent and designer. He spent summers testing boats for Dunphy at the family cottage at Long Lake in Saxeville, WI. He then worked for Thompson Boat as a plant manager and designer in Peshtigo until 1966, when he moved back to Oshkosh. He then worked for Oshkosh Truck Corporation as superintendent of shipping and receiving until his retirement in 1978. Upon retirement he moved to Florida and returned to Oshkosh in 2004. He is preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Betty Ginke and his second wife, Carol Ginke; his older brother, Noyel Ginke; a sister, Audrey (Roethlisberger) Ginke; and one daughter, Lynne (Saunders) Ginke. He is survived by one sister, Beverly (Robert) Schuhart; a son, Robert Ginke; six step children, Paula Jaeger, Karen Haines, Joyce Falk, Sue Kuklinski, Peggy Birdsall, Mike Pucci; five grandchildren; five great grandchildren; thirteen step grand children; five step great grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, one brother-in-law, and many nieces and nephews.Military honors will be held on Thursday June 19, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. at Lake View Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to the semester at sea program, which can be accessed at www.semesteratsea.org
