Robert Martin Hughes

March 5, 1945 — June 9, 2017

Robert M. Hughes, age 72, passed away on Friday, June 9, 2017, at his residence. He was born on March 5, 1945 at Mercy Hospital in Oshkosh to Henry and Dorothy (Callahan) Hughes.

Robert graduated from Oshkosh Lourdes then attended Benedictine College. After college and serving in Vietnam with the Marine Corps, he went on to work as a Deputy and Detective for the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department from 1973 until his retirement in 2003.

Bob, as he was known, was a voracious reader and historian. He was a kind hearted man with a gruff affect who touched the lives of all who met him. He truly cared for mankind and loved his family dearly. He raised two boys and if he had ever wanted to be remembered for anything it wasn’t as a detective, nor a Marine, nor as a son, or even as an amazingly average football player; it was to be remembered as a good father. And, in that endeavor he was successful. He will be missed.

He is survived by his sons, Cal (Katie) of Sheboygan and Pat (Amy) Hughes of Oshkosh; grandchildren, Rylan, Declan, Henry, Marta and Halle Hughes; brother, Patrick (Judith) Hughes of Neptune, NJ; nieces and nephews, Patrick, James, John, Theresa, Elizabeth, Deborah, and Henry.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Thomas and James.

A mass of Christian Burial will be held for Robert at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, June 16, 2017 at Most Blessed Sacrament Parish- St. Peter’s Site (435 High Ave.) with Fr. James Jugenheimer officiating. Visitation will be held at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Interment will be held at Lake View Memorial Park following the service.
