Dr. Robert Sumner Pickering, 74, of Oshkosh passed into the eternally loving arms of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Sunday January 8, 2006. Bob was born in Plainfield, WI on October 20, 1931. He was the son of Charles Sumner Pickering and Ruth Marion Gooch Pickering. Bob married Audrey Schultz in LaCrosse, WI on June 13, 1953. She passed away in 1980. Bob married Jean Juedes Hanseder on July 24, 1982 in Oshkosh. Bob received his B.S. degree in Science & Physical Education in 1953 at the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse. In 1962 he received his M.A. in Science Education at Michigan State University and in 1970 he returned there to get his Ph.D. in Curriculum & Science Education. From 1953 to 1961 Bob was in the U.S. Naval Reserves as a Supervisor of Instructors. He taught in Fond du Lac Public Schools from 1953 to 1961 and the New Berlin Public Schools from 1962 to 1965. From 1965 to his retirement in 1994, bob worked for the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh as a professor in the College of Education and Human Services, as Assistant Dean for two years, Associate Dean for 14 years, and Acting Dean for one year. Bob was a member of the National Science Teachers Association, American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education, and the Association for the Education of Teachers of Science. He served on numerous committees and task forces for the university, college, and the community. Bob received the designation of Professor Emeritus. Bob was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Oshkosh. Bob loved spending time with his family and delighted in the activities of his grandchildren and step-grandchildren. He loved fishing, golfing, playing cards, and boating. He had many wonderful friend and family members who shared these activities with him, their friendships were very dear to him. Bob also enjoyed gambling, especially with his nephew who was special to him, Peter (Kim) Boykin of Carson City, Nevada. Survivors include his wife Jean Pickering, Oshkosh; one son Chris (Kathy) Pickering, Green Bay; two daughters, Laura Pickering, Rockport, Mass., Paula Pickering, Peoria, AZ; one step-daughter Jamie (Greg) Miller, Maple Grove, MN; one step-son James T. (Tamara) Hanseder, Roatan, Honduras; one sister Bonnie Boykin, West Hills, CA; five grandchildren Nick (Tanya) Rasmussen, Kristin Rasmussen, Aaron Pickering, Adam Pickering, and Colin Pickering; three step-grandchildren Dakota Evans, Indica Hanson, and Jade Miller; one great-grandson Vin Dylan; father-in-law Robert Juedes, Oshkosh; brother and sister-in-laws Dennis & Joyce Wussow, Oshkosh, David & Beverly Juedes, Oshkosh, Daniel & Shelley Juedes, Sheboygan Falls, WI, Ken (Alice) Inghan, LaCrosse; and several nephews and nieces.Bob was preceded in death by his first wife Audrey Pickering, parents Charles and Ruth Marion Pickering, sister Shirley Larson, mother-in-laws Sylvia Juedes and Lillian Schultz, brother-in-laws Lyman Larson and Edwin Boykin, and a sister-in-law Shirley Inghan. Funeral services for Bob will be held Friday January 13, 2006 at 11:30 AM at Bethlehem Lutheran Church (1206 Ontario St., Oshkosh), Revs. Walter Moll and Paul Lidtke officiating. Family and friends may call at the Konrad- Behlman Funeral Home-West (corner of Witzel & Lake Pointe Dr.) on Thursday from 3 to 7 PM and at the church Friday from 10 AM until the service. Entombment will follow the services at Lake View Memorial Park. Bobs family wishes to express its deepest gratitude to the doctors and nurses of the Aurora Hospital and Doctors Alzoubi, Naida, and Dar and their staffs, the Aurora Visiting Nurse Association and hospice caregivers for their wonderful care. We are also grateful to the many friends and family who have been so supportive. Robert Pickering memorials have been established in his honor for Christian schooling for children of Bethlehem Lutheran Church and the Mayo Foundation for brain cancer research.
