Robert William “Bob” Nelson, 90, Oshkosh, passed away Friday, March 30, 2018, at Aurora Medical Center. Bob was born September 13, 1927, the son of Walter W. and Lizzie M. (O’Neal) Nelson in Lower Ben Salem Township, Bucks County, PA. The family moved to Plainfield, WI where he attended grade school and graduated from Plainfield High School in 1945. Bob received further education at the Milwaukee Institute of Technology while working as a foreman at the American Can Company. Bob served in the U.S. Maritime Service and at a later date was an Army Artillery gun Sgt, stationed in Germany. He moved to Oshkosh where he was in Real Estate from 1964 until retirement in 1996, during which time he married Sandra Sheffer Porst, his inseparable mate, on March 13, 1982. She preceded Bob in death on September 13, 2017. Bob was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church. He loved life and all it gave him!
Bob is survived by a son, Stephen from his first marriage. Steve (Jackie) is the parent of five children: Stephen, Monika, Tiffany (Dominic) Shaffer, Nicholas, and most notably Heidi who lived with Bob for many years, and great grandchildren: Bryce Shaffer, Isabelle Shaffer, Theo Shaffer, Verle Creek the 3rd, and Andrew Nelson. Further survived by grandchildren: Lena, Lilly and Lyric; son-in-law: Jim Hanseder; step-children: Jayne Frank, Laurie (Roger) Knudson, Lynne Gruel, Jason (Robin) Porst, Joel Porst, and special sister-in-law, Elizabeth Nelson; step-grandchildren: Erik and Zachary Knudson, Katelyn and Jacob Gruel, and Lindsay Porst; special niece, Amy (Tim) Alvarez and their children Taya and Abi; and many other family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife Sandee and daughter Kirby, who were the loves of his life; his parents, and a brother Don.
Funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM on Monday, April 16, 2018 at Our Saviors Lutheran Church, 1860 Wisconsin St. with Pastor Jan LaVake officiating. Visitation will be from 11:00 AM to the time of the service. Interment at Lake View Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions should be made to Alzheimer’s research.
