Ronald Kenneth Rasmussen, age 69, of Oshkosh died unexpectedly at his home early Wednesday morning on March 18, 2009. Ron was born in Oshkosh on February 28, 1940 the son of Kenneth and Eleanor Rasmussen. On July 26, 1958 Ron married his best friend and the love of his life; Barbara L. Barton. They recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with many friends and family by their side. Ron was a Deputy Sheriff in Winnebago County for 28 ½ years, joining the department in 1963 and retiring in 1991. He ran for Sheriff in 1978 and again in 1980 and treasured the many friendships he made on the campaign trail. Ron belonged to the Deputy Sheriffs Association and the Professional Police Association and was a past recipient of the Law Enforcement Officer of the Year award. Ron also served legal papers for many local attorneys for over forty years. Ron was a past member of the Kiwanis, Eagles Club and Masons and was a past leader in Cub Scouts and Webelos. He organized the first Pepsi Platter Parties at the Oshkosh YMCA and always enjoyed working with young people.Ron was very proud of each of his children and grandchildren and particularly enjoyed the many trips he felt so fortunate to be able to share with them. He attended every function with them that he possibly could and treasured the time they spent together. Sharing stories around the campfire with family and friends at his cottage at Little Silver Lake Resort in Wild Rose, traveling, hunting with his son, daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren were some of Rons favorite things to do. Rons favorite travel destination was New York City, but he loved any trip he could take with Barb and his family. Ron was a tremendously loyal fan of Oshkosh West High School basketball and followed the boys and girls teams both at home and on the road. Ron is survived by his loving wife Barbara and his children: Rhonda (Gary) Bartels, Rick (Dana) Rasmussen, Lori (David) Brand and Greg (Jody) Rasmussen. He is further survived by eight grandchildren: Lindsey Monroe, Ryan Rasmussen, Casey Bartels, Benjamin Brand, Jordan and McKenzie Rasmussen, and Michael and Katie Luethe. Ron is also survived by brothers Noel (Jean) Rasmussen, Jim (Linda) Rasmussen and sister Chris (John) Nolte as well as several other relatives and friends. Ron was preceded in death by his parents Kenneth and Eleanor Rasmussen, an infant brother David, his father-in-law and mother-in-law Merle and Lorraine Barton, a brother- in-law and sister-in-law Bruce and Gloria Barton, and a nephew William Barton. Funeral services for Ron will be held on Monday, March 23rd at St. Raphael Church in Oshkosh with Fr. Doug LeCaptain officiating. Visitation for family and friends will be from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM with the Mass to follow at 11:00. Burial will be at Lake View Memorial Park in Oshkosh. In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established in Rons name for The American Heart Association. Ron will be deeply missed by his family and everyone who knew him.The family wishes to express our heartfelt thanks to the paramedics and the Oshkosh Police Department for their compassion and support.Ron Rasmussen was truly A Cop Who Cares. – We love you so much #52!
