Thomas A. McDermott, Sr., age 76, of Oshkosh died at his home on Friday, July 17, 2009. Born in Mankato, Minnesota on December 16, 1932, Tom was the son of the late Albert I. and Stella Zimmerer McDermott. Following his graduation from the University of Notre Dame in 1954, Tom served in the U.S. Marine Corps until 1956, and was discharged as a First Lieutenant. On October 19, 1957, Tom married Helen Macke. Tom worked at the A.I. McDermott Company and retired as President in 1994. He was active in several industry organizations, including the Wisconsin Pump & Well Suppliers, the National Groundwater Association, and the American Supply Association. He also served as a Director of Valley Bank Oshkosh. He was a long time member of the Oshkosh Country Club and was active in the Wisconsin Woodland Owners Association and the New Mexico Cattle Growers Association. Tom was a member of St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church. Tom is survived by his wife Helen, his four sons, their wives and children: Thomas and Marcia McDermott, Daniel, John and Laura (Oshkosh); James and Rebecca McDermott, Madeline and Helen (Leesburg, Virginia); John and Susan McDermott, Jerris, Seamus, Justine and Aubrey (Oshkosh); and Richard McDermott and Jane Nagle, Julia and Mary (Chicago, Illinois). Tom is also survived by two sisters and their husbands: Patricia and Jack Kammerer (Lake Forest, Illinois); and Ellen and Gifford Gibson (Fort Collins, Colorado), a brother-in-law Bob Macke (Appleton), and many nieces and nephews. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at the St. Vincent site of St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church (corner of Oregon Street and South Park Avenue) on Tuesday, July 21, 2009 at 10:30 AM, with Rev. William Van de Kreeke officiating. Family and friends may call at Konrad-Behlman Funeral Home - Westside on Monday from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM and on Tuesday at St. Jude the Apostle Church from 9:30 AM to the time of Mass. Interment will be at Calvary Catholic Cemetery. Memorials may be sent to the Oshkosh Unified Catholic Schools, the Boys and Girls Club of Oshkosh, and the St. Labre Indian School of Ashland, Montana (www.stlabre.org).
