Verna M. Summerville, age 80 of Oshkosh, passed away at the Wisconsin Veterans Home in King on Wednesday, February 8, 2023. She was born January 6, 1943 in Louisville, KY to parents, Luther Marion Welch and Verna Mae (Kollmeyer) Welch. On June 3, 1961 she was married to Marvin F. Summerville, Jr. in Columbus, IN, where she had grown up.
She is survived by her son, Mark (Michelle) Summerville; daughters, Laura Holevatz and Elizabeth Schmude; seven grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren; sisters, Judith Andrew and Alta Welch; brothers: Luther (Lori) Welch Jr., Charles Welch, David (Mary) Welch, Bruce (Tracy) Welch and Jerald Welch; sister-in-law, Georgetta Gilmore.
In addition to her parents, Verna was preceded in death by her loving husband, Marvin Summerville, son-in-law, James Schmude; brothers, Michael Gilmore and Donald Welch; sister-in-law, Karen Welch.
Verna was an active member of St. John Ev. Lutheran Church in Oshkosh. She was a member of the Rachel Circle, had led a group Bible study for a number of years, and enjoyed serving as a lector and a greeter. Later in life she joined Zion Lutheran Church.
Her grandchildren were always first in her heart. In addition to other arts and crafts, she enjoyed crochet, hardanger, oil painting, tying quilts, and creative writing.
A memorial service for Verna will be held at Zion Lutheran Church, 400 N. Sawyer St. on Saturday, February 18, 2023 at 11:00 AM with Rev. Jeffrey Knoll officiating. Visitation will be held from 10:00 AM until the time of the service. Inurnment will take place in Lake View Memorial Park at a later date.
