Virginia M. Wachholz, 86 of the Town of Nekimi, died Thursday September 13, 2007 at her home. She was born in Lone Pine, WI (Portage County) on July 21, 1921 the daughter of Carl and Marie Rogers Waterman. She learned how to work hard at an early age picking beans and cucumbers along with her mother and brother for a canning company. On November 29, 1947 she married Lester R. Wachholz at the First English Lutheran Church in Oshkosh. They lived together for 50 years and he preceded her in death on February 4, 1998.Virginia also developed her love for cooking as a youth working as a summer cook in Plainfield. She graduated as Valedictorian from High School and then attended the Oshkosh Business College. She went to work as a bookkeeper for Dodd Gas and Appliance Co. During World War II she traveled to the West Coast where she held down several jobs. After the war she moved to Milwaukee to work for the Veterans Administration before returning to Oshkosh to work again for Mr. Dodd.Virginia remained an active member of the First English Lutheran Church being involved in just about every area of church life. Her many church activities include being a Sunday School Teacher, serving on the Church Council, being the President of the Church Women, Secretary of Education, Bible study leader for the Esther Circle, serving on the Evangelism Committee, the task force for reorganizing the ELCA, the Planning Committee for Region 5, on the board for Global Missions, working in the kitchen for funerals and other church functions, church quilters, helped put together the anniversary cook book. She and Lester had been founding members of the Christian Fellowship Society. She and Lester bought and sold antiques and enjoyed Sunday rides in their 1923 Model T.She was also active outside of church. She was a former school board member for Black Oak School, a building committee member for the Green Meadow School, a Golden Oak 4-H Club cooking leader for 12 years, Past President of the Oshkosh Toastmistress Club, charter member of the Bethel Home Auxiliary and served on all of their building fund drives, and volunteered in their Gift Shop, a charter member of the Friendship Homemakers Club, Past County Chairman of Extension Homemakers Housing, Energy and Environment Committee, past Public Relations Chairman for the Winnebago County Extension Homemakers, served on jury duty, participated in several community charity drives, a past member of the Winnebago Conservation Club, a volunteer for the Oshkosh Convention and Tourism Bureau. She received the State Homemaker Extension Awards for skit and monologue writing, and the 50 year recognition from UW Extension Homemakers in 2001. She enjoyed traveling and her last trip was to Ireland. In her spare time she was an ARTEX home embroidery representative. During her retirement years, Virginia was VP of meeting and greeting for Heavy Critters. Virginia is survived by her daughter, Cynthia (Thomas) Glatz, her son Ronald (Linda) Wachholz, her grandchildren, Jennifer (Roger) Magnuson, Joshua Wachholz and Kristina Wachholz, and three great grandchildren, Clayton, Caroline, and Carlton Magnuson and a brother, Roger Waterman all of Oshkosh, a brother-in-law, Arnold Malzhan of Berlin, WI and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. She was also preceded in death by her son, Larry on February 13, 1968, and an infant son.Virginias funeral will be Monday September 17, 2007 at Noon at the First English Lutheran Church. Burial will be in the Peace Lutheran Cemetery. Family and friends may call at the church on Monday from 10:00 AM until the time of the funeral. Memorials to the Women of the Church and Bethel Home have been established. The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to all of Virginias home companions, without whom she would not have been able to stay in her home.
