Walter R. Bahr, age 83, of Oshkosh, passed away December 28, 2016 at The Waterford. Born on August 17, 1933, he was the son of Walter F. and Jenny (Ohrt) Bahr. Walter married Roberta Messer on December 28, 1991.Walter grew up in Milwaukee and graduated from Washington High School in 1952. After graduation he worked as a lineman for the Wisconsin Telephone Company. He was in the Air Force Reserve from 1952 to April, 1954, when he joined the US Army. He was stationed as an army radioman in Japan until 1956 and then served in the Army Reserve until 1961. After discharge, he took advantage of the GI Bill and earned a degree in Economics from UW-Milwaukee.He started his career at Dun and Bradstreet but then moved into the medical field. While at Deaconess Hospital in Milwaukee, he was offered a position in the business office at Mercy Medical Center in Oshkosh, where he remained for 23 years.Walt served on the Board of Directors for the Wisconsin Medical Credit Association, the Hospital Financial Management Association, and several Credit Unions. He also served on the First English Lutheran Church Council for several terms, including one term as President, and several terms on their financial committees. He was an EAA Fly-in volunteer for many years and was especially proud of being a life-long blood donor. He was proud to have built a summer home on Wilson Lake in Waushara County. Walt was an avid reader, especially of history, biography, and theology, and was a life-long learner. He was a member of Learning in Retirement for many years. He and his wife Roberta travelled extensively throughout Europe, Canada, and the United States, including Alaska and Hawaii. He visited every U.S. Civil War National Battlefield plus most of the Revolutionary War Battlefields. He also had an extensive collection of 150 military swords. When he downsized to apartment living, he donated over 200 books to the Oshkosh Public Library.He is survived by his wife, Roberta Messer, and three children from his first marriage to Patricia Bahr: Greg (Diana) Bahr of Howards Grove, WI, and Paul Bahr of Oshkosh, and Elizabeth (Jason) Bass of Oshkosh. He is also survived by two step-children, Kirsten Messer of Colorado Springs, CO., and Kimberly Jane (Jason) Lee of Hartland, WI. Also surviving are three grandchildren, Kyle Bahr, Matthew Bahr, and Alec Schlosser, and three step- grandchildren, Ashley Schlosser, Olivia Lee, and Josephine Lee. He is further survived by his brother Robert (Marilyn) Bahr of West Salem, WI.A memorial service is going to be held at Konrad-Behlman funeral homes- Westside on Thursday, January 5, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Tim Greenwald officiating. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.The family wishes to thank the staff at The Waterford and Heartland Hospice for their excellent care. In lieu of flowers, a memorial is being established.
