Wilbert Heikkinen, 88, of Oshkosh died on April 19, 2014. Wilbert was born on May 11, 1925 to Charles and Mari (Knuuttila) Heikkinen in Baltic, Mi. He graduated from Hancock Central High School in Hancock, MI in 1943. From there he joined the army in 1943 and served in India. He was honorably discharged in 1945. Wilbert went on to get a Bachelor Degree of Science in Mechanical Engineering at Michigan Technological University in 1950. Wilbert married Shirley Johnson on July 21, 1962 at St. Marks Lutheran Church in Marquette, MI.After moving to Oshkosh he worked for Mercury Marine and Lennox Candle.Wilbert was proud of his Finnish heritage and of being a Yooper. He was also proud to announce that he and Shirley had taken five trips to Finland to visit family and friends. In his younger years he liked to bowl, golf, and play volleyball. He also sang in the church choir and he was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church.He is survived by his wife, Shirley of Oshkosh, WI; sister, Vieno Macewicz, of Bloomington, MN; several nieces and nephews; and special friends, Brenda and Eddie Phillips of Oshkosh.He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Henry, Elmer, and Einar, who was killed in Guadalcanal in WWII; and two sisters Bertha Macewicz and Esther Brassaw.A funeral service for Wilbert will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 23, 2014 at Zion Lutheran Church (400 N. Sawyer St.). Visitation will be held at church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will be in Oskar Cemetery in Houghton, MI.In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established.
